what kind of insect could be in my dresser drawer that is eating pantyhose? How do I treat this?

Pam on May 15, 2012I live in Louisiana too. Can tell you that those large tree roaches will eat nylon fabric. Could be moths also. Try putting some cedar chips in the toe of an old pair of hose or knee high and keep in your drawers and see if that helps.Helpful Reply

Barbara C on May 15, 2012Thanks, where can I find cedar chips that last? The standard issue chips sold by Bed, Bath, Beyond, etc. don't last. I've put the remaining pantyhose in plastic baggies. Hope that helps.Helpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on May 15, 2012Cedar chips in bags works, If you can get moth balls, that works well also. But I am not sure if you still can get them. I would first however take everything out of the dressers, then take the draws outside in the sun and clean them real well. A dry talc powder rubbed in them along the corners of the draws will help also. Vacuum what is left over and put everything back. Clean all the clothes as well. Moth larva can be just about anywhere within the cabinet or clothes, and the idea is to remove them to prevent a infestation. putting everything in bags will work, but the one bag which still has the moth larva will still be damaged. All the bags will do is prevent other clothes items from becoming destroyed.Helpful Reply

Pam on May 15, 2012Several places sell cedar eggs, cedar balls and chiips. Google cedar chips and see what it brings up. Even if they don't last long you will find out if they work. Also, do what Woodbridge suggested. After, wash cloths in hot water gentle cycle, just in case, it moth to kill the larvae. Add 1 cup of vinegar to the wash water.Helpful Reply

Pam on May 15, 2012Barbara, so you have any of those steam cleaners? You could take out all of the drawers and steam clean every square inch and get inside also after the drawers are out. The steam should kill off any little culprits. Most insets don't like vinegar, would rub down the inside of the drawers with vinegar on a cloth. The smell will dissipate and everything will ssmell fresh and clean. Can't hurt anything. Worth a try. Without knowing what's the insect you're dealing with is hard to answer with a correct answer. These are suggestions which may just work. Beter than having to keep replacing all those panty hose. Good luck. Let us know what finally worked.Helpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on May 15, 2012Just be careful with steam system. Older veneer quality furniture will be damaged by the moisture and high temps.Helpful Reply
