DIY a Folding Workbench

Or grill station or potting station or craft table or dining table or kitchen work surface or or or....

Not only is this project easy to make, it's cheap and the possibilities of use are endless. I spent under ten bucks for the items you see in the photo above and had some others on hand. Be sure to come by my blog Flipping the Flip for the full list of materials.

After researching ideas and combining them, I came up with the design for the fold up workbench. This one I made for our garage. First, cut the sides, then the front out of 2x4.

Assemble the frame of three pieces then screw on the plywood top.

Now, you could be cool and do the rounded top legs swinging off bolts like I had planned, like my cornhole project (check out my other projects!). Or you could fail miserably and go a different route. Even my sander is sad for me.

I ended up hinging the legs. Sure these are wimpy hinges but a bit of fancy glue and they should hold up a-ok for my purposes. I'll use the bolts to keep the legs in the open position so they don't crash out from under me, spewing materials everywhere.

I attached a cross piece of 1x4 to keep the legs all aligned and straight and such.

Moving on out to the garage, I attached a 2x4 ledger which fits between the legs.

Pilfering hinges from a door I removed then inadvertently ruined, I attached them behind the ledger (well, after taking the ledger down again of course), then flopped the other half on top of the table.

And voila! Folding workbench in the garage!

I attached a small hook and eye as the locking mechanism and bingo, it works! All folds up super tight and narrow. How perfect is that, yes? Imagine all the uses this thing could be! In the garage, in the basement, as a dining table, kitchen uses....I mean, the list goes on!
