Petra Loureiro on Jun 25, 2013I do not know if this will help you but I put one table spoon Epson Salt around the plant a little way away from the stem, this will prevent yellowing of the leaves. Then I also put a generous helping of Farm Manure around the plant up to the drip line and water well. Take care not to put it too close to the stems to prevent burn from uncured manure.Helpful Reply

Cynthia on Jun 25, 2013Hibiscus is usual a plant that requires you to bring it inside in NY. If it's like mine it will start to bloom in July.Helpful Reply

Elaine Simmons on Jun 25, 2013Louise probably has a hardy hibiscus that can stand the cold winters. If it survived one year, it will continue to survive, most likely. I have three and they have been in the ground for seven years and I live in Iowa at present. They bloom late in the summer as Douglas said but when the do they are gorgeous!Helpful Reply

Pat Mountfort on Jun 26, 2013I have had mine for 6 years in NH. I do not bring them in, I simply cut them to the ground level in late fall and mulch with about 12in of leaves held in place with a small inexpensive wire fence. I uncover them as soon as the last frost has passed, tricky in NH. They come back with more shoots than the year before every year. Mine right now are about 12in high and will be to full height by the end of July/beginning of August with beautiful blooms.Helpful Reply

Devon Cretella on Jun 26, 2013I don't have any answers for you but you actually answered one for me...I planted two plants next to a trellis last year and forgot to record them in my garden journal. Over the winter I totally forgot what they were and they aren't quite large enough yet to easily identify, but your photo did it-they are hibiscus! It's @#$% getting old! Thanks for posting the photo!Helpful Reply

Linda on Jun 26, 2013I wintered my hibiscus shrubs at church, and just put them back outside in early June. They're not too happy with me right now, but one sported a bloom right after I brought them home. They do require some feeding to encourage blooms, try MiracleGro.Helpful Reply

Peg on Jun 26, 2013I took these Aug 7th of last year, 2012, mine were in bloom then and I live in Cold Spring, NY, south of you Louise. These are the "hardy" hibiscus, some folks don't know that you can grow them outdoors in the cold climates.Helpful Reply

Peg on Jun 29, 2013Yes, and I did grow some over the winter, but I went on vacation and they did not get watered, somehow overlook by my helper. :( So, at least I know the seeds were good and will germinate. I have some other hardy hibiscus growing that I mail ordered, "hibiscus moscheutos". The leaves are not the same as my two pictured here. The pink one is "Kopper King", the red is "Robert Fleming", they both have bronze/coppery colored maple shaped leaves. The ones I mail ordered have heart shaped green leaves. They are ready to be put in larger pots and let them take off growing.Helpful Reply
