White Oak Studio Designs on Jun 28, 2013Hi Deb, I'm from Pullman just around the corner from you. I garden on the corner of 109th and 52nd St. Let me know if you'de like to stop in for garden tour someday soon! I taught my dog to NOT dig in the yard only the woods but if that doesn't work perhaps you might try something uncomfortable to lie on like a decorative pile of field stones in which you have placed a whiskey barrel to hold some shade loving plants? Or possibly a pricky shrub might deter them? Or maybe try putting a metal bench in that spot to "train" them to find another place to lay? Do they have shade elsewhere that you could train them to go to? They might also be looking for a way to get away from the biting bugs and knats which is an issue for my dog right now.Helpful Reply

Annie Stuart on Jun 28, 2013I don't have a dog (my rabbits do the same thing, though), and I agree with Donna. the first thing I'd do is find an alternate shady area for the dog to dig and play in, and offer treats and toys (and Water!) in that place to encourage your pet to go there. You could even put down some sand. Then I'd put a big bush by the door, or a planter or bench, to deter the dog from digging there again.Helpful Reply

Deb S on Jul 10, 2013Thanks Donna, yes I'd love to check out your place! Annie, I tried the bush by the door, it's didn't work; he just dug sound and under it. I might try the sand with a bench & try coaxing him with treats & toys. I'm thinking he's trying to cool himself off with the cool dirt because he's a black lab mix, very old & very stubborn . I did have Miskito trees there, but he killed them by digging & laying on them. Tried the metal fence too; no luck.Helpful Reply
