Laminate Countertop Disaster Prevention
by

Laminate kitchen countertops are fantastic in terms of durability and being cost effective but I've had my share of issues with them. I've used RedGard to prevent water from ruining the exposed wood where the sink fits. Does anyone have other tips for preventing similar issues? My current blog post discusses the use of RedGard and I'd love to hear from the Hometalk community. www.homerepairtutor.com

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on May 22, 2012When we set sinks into any of our laminate tops whether the tops were post formed or custom made, we used plumbers putty under the sink lip before we put the clips on and tightened it down. To my knowledge I have never had a sink area swell due to moisture. This product however would be a good choice under and around the dishwasher area. When opening the door after the wash cycle you would find a lot of steam and I have seen tops swell along that edge quite a lot. Great idea.

Home Repair Tutor on May 22, 2012Thanks Woodbridge for the tip on using RedGard around the dishwasher. That's a great location for it due to the steam creating so much moisture. Your comment would be a good for all of us who either put in countertops ourselves or use contractors that may not think of using such a product.
