My counter top needs molding around it, how do I do that?

What would you do? When I installed these cabinets I found that they protrude out the same distance as the counter, the cabinets can not be pushed back any further (this would be the easiest fix). You can see in the picture that I have added 1X to fill in the space between the cabinet and the counter now I need to finish it out to make it look normal, I wondered if I could use molding, but I'm not sure how to do that.

Something just doesn't look right with this install. Cabinet depth is 24", cabinet height is 35" to 36", counter depth is 25" to 25 1/2".

@CK Still would look bad. The cabinets would still be flush with the countertop. It's like trying to get a silk purse from a sows ear.

can a synthetic molding be used that can be trimmed out with a handsaw and applied with perhaps adhesive?

You are correct, I am unable to have it re-installed at this time and am looking for a way to make it look better or finished. Does anyone have any suggestions?

It looks like a farmhouse sink to the right of the photo. Add a piece of barnboard that has been sealed with an epoxy finish to make it waterproof., Glue with a waterproof glue and screw to the 1x2 and fill in the screw holes.

@Chris In your picture it looks like you have used barn board as the counter top and that is not what I need, however are you suggesting that I use barn board as an edge covering the counter and the 1X? If so can you give me more information I am not sure how that would work, how to attach it to the counter. Also do you have additional pictures to the one you have posted perhaps a front view? Thank you for your suggestions I like them.

If you painted molding white and add pulls to the drawers it might just do the trick on limited budget. Might have to caulk a bit...good luck

You can buy a variety of almost 'stick on' mouldings (well, you can here in NZ). Any good store with a household fittings section (ie bathroom, kitchen, plumbing etc) should be able to help and give advice.

I have commented that there was a problem with the install. I have been mulling this in my mind. The problem is the sink you have is a surface mount sink. Its made to sit on top of the counter -hence the lip "photo 1. Under counter mount sinks have no lip -"photo 2. You used a surface mount sink and installed it as a under mount sink, that is why you have the gap between the counter and cabinet that you covered with a 1X. Best solution I have is to get some edge tiles to cover the counter and 1X on the front. Use mastic to glue on the edging and painters tape to hold it in place till the glue dries. You could also use foam wood look trim instead of tile edging.
