My yard hold water when it rain

Douglas Hunt on Jul 06, 2013Alice, Alabama Cooperative Extension has some suggestions on shrubs for wet areas here: http://www.aces.edu/counties/Marion/files/wetsoilshrub.pdf To that list I would add sweetspire (Itea virginica) (look for the cultivar 'Henry's Garnet') and clethra, which has the added bonus of great fragrance. If red-twigged dogwoods do well in your area, they would also be very happy in your conditions.Helpful Reply

360 Sod (Donna Dixson) on Jul 07, 2013Hi @Alice M , can you tell us a little bit more about the area? How large is it? Is it in the sun or shade? How big do you want the plants to be at maturity? Would you like to do an entire bed or is it just a small area that you want some plants to soak up water in?Helpful Reply

Irish53 on Jul 07, 2013Does the grade of your yard run towards your house that the water is aiming for the foundation? You may have to first have that changed so the water is going away from the house. If you have standing water that is stagnant there is a concern about mosquitoes. If not any plants that need lots of water.Helpful Reply

Therese C on Jul 08, 2013Bamboo plants love a lot of water..but be careful they are aggressive and will take over your yard and the neighbors if you don't thin them or build a retaining block to stop them.Helpful Reply
