I think this looks like pine or oak, not sure, but it's not sanded and I'm wondering if a waterproof light stain or just a clear varnish would do nicely?

thanks so much. I went out today and bought some stain/water proof protectant. Can't wait to get started tomorrow :)...

finally, got it stained and varnished....now just have to dig a hole and get it up. ....
