KMS Woodworks on Jun 01, 2012I guess I've been in the desert west too long...AC still seams foreign to me. we can often get by with evaporative coolers here as our humidity levels are so low. You could start your research here with some sizing guidlines http://www.consumerenergycenter.org/home/heating_cooling/window_ac.htmlHelpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Jun 02, 2012Brand name is not to important Chaya, Its the SEER rating that your looking for. The Higher the SEER number the less it cost to run. When looking at the energy star rating, you will see that the higher the SEER rating the unit has the more the little arrow on the yellow tag moves to the lower cost. This tag will allow you to compare units on operation costs. What really determines what works well and what does not, is the sizing of the unit itself. The higher the BTU rating, the more power it has to cool a room. Most have 8,000 or 9,000 BTU ratings for your 110 volt units. If you shop around you will find a few in the 10,000 BTU range. Once you begin to go over that size, the units require 220 volts to operate. Which most apartments do not have.Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Jul 19, 2012I can deal with most heat...at least out here where it is dry...what kills me is the humidity....I'm heading back to Michigan for a vacation with the kids in a bit over a week...hopefully the water front breezes of Lake Michigan will keep me from dying.Helpful Reply

2ms2 on Jul 19, 2012Kevin, I think NYC and Michigan are probably equally swampy. Stay by the shore...I was out in Long Island recently by the shore and it was like 10 degrees cooler than Brooklyn.Helpful Reply

2ms2 on Jul 19, 2012I have camped in the mid-west in the summer and it was...buggy and muggy. Bring plenty of bug spray and long-sleeved T-shirts and long pants to keep the bugs off. Good luck!Helpful Reply
