Pam on Jun 03, 2012Try adding a couple cups of vinegar and maybe a box of baking soda to the wash load. Each of these help neutralize odors. Let me know if this helps.Helpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Jun 03, 2012Check out this link. http://extension.missouri.edu/p/GH145#restoring Also professional cleaning also should be done when ever possible. Your insurance hopefully you have this, should cover the costs involved with your issues. We too had a kitchen fire a few years ago, After some battle with my insurance company, they professionally cleaned all our bed linens, curtains, all the rugs were torn out and replaced due to smoke, all oil paintings professionally cleaned etc. Stick to your guns on this and get them to pay for this work to be done.Helpful Reply

Terri D on Jun 04, 2012My suggestion was going to be baking soda too, it's inexpensive and wont damage his clothes, Then throw in a good ole dryer sheet to sweeten things up:)Helpful Reply

Pat G on Feb 24, 2015I noticed this is from long ago. For any new people viewing it now, I will add what I have used. I used vinegar, about 1/2 to 1 cup, plus some kind of grease cutting soap like Dawn or cheap shampoo, plus laundry detergent. Ran it twice ( 4 waters). If still smokey, run it again. Also, I tried to dry things outdoors on a washline when I could to air the odor out, and used fabric softener and or Fabreeze. On dishes, the dishwasher would cut down on the odor, but not take off the smoke film. Had to hand wash.Helpful Reply
