Sia@South 47th on Jul 17, 2013How about some cool cheap DIY Navy Pennant flags (made from felt or dyed burlap with initials of teams, school stuff etc.cut from grey or white), surrounding the Navy Blue Clock that you're getting him?Helpful Reply

Mary Insana on Jul 17, 2013What about a navy blue desk lamp and a navy blue laundry hamper and if his dorm needs a carpet then a navy dorm carpet? My son is a college senior and he didn't care at all about anything matching. I bought him grey microfiber sheets and a comforter in different shades of grey plaid and grey towels and wash cloths at Walmart. He has used these going on his 4th year now. If your son is anything like mine he'll have sports or band posters on the walls. Most college students depend more on their phones for alarm clocks or the time. Where is he going to school?Helpful Reply

Kimberly Barney on Jul 17, 2013I think I would add color with bulletin boards covered with fabric. The bulletin boards could be used to tack up notes, concert tickets, etc. I agree with previous post that he will use his cell phone for an alarm clock so he doesn't need a clock. You can also add some color with inexpensive canvas painted with graphic design. I would multi-task these as well by placing clips to hang items from or using magnetic paint so that items can be attached. Dorms are small so you want to have items that multi-task. There are also the essential items as a previous poster stated that could add color (i.e. hamper, trash can, microwave, snack holders, and a carpet.Helpful Reply

Polly Zieper on Jul 18, 2013Mary, My son, who will go to U of FL, also doesn't care about matching.I will look into a small throw rug and thanks for the bulletinboard idea, Kimberly. I've done that before, but didn't think of it this time.Helpful Reply

Sarah Jackson on Jul 19, 2013How about some throw pillows made from old blue jeans? They would have a real "guy" feel, are sturdy, cheap to make (from old jeans you already have or buy some at a thrift store) and functional. Small ones for the bed or even bigger ones for sitting/lying on the floor.Helpful Reply

Polly Zieper on Jul 19, 2013Thanks for the answers, but I'm still hoping for more ideas.love the idea of using old blue jeans, as they are plentiful in a house of 5 kids, and easy to buy at a consignment store or salvation army( and cheap!)just have to look up on the web how to make pillows out of them. Once I get that done, I'll start collecting old pairs! Thanks!Helpful Reply

Polly Zieper on Jul 23, 2013Thanks, Sarah, with 5 kids( 3 of whom are boys) I always have a few old, ripped pairs of jeans around. and I could buy a pair or 2 from the Salvation army store-pants, or denim shirts- if I didn't have the colors I wanted! Now I just need to find some sewing instructions from the internet, and get my sewing machine tuned up...I'll post pictures whenI've actually made something.Helpful Reply

Mary Insana on Jul 23, 2013@Polly Zieper Make one side of the pillow in blue jean material and the other side from the front of an old but favorite t-shirt. No need for a pattern, just get an existing old throw pillow or a pillow form, measure and add an inch all the way around. Sew 3 sides and about an inch or tow on both sides of the 4th side which will leave an opening to stuff the pillow in. Hand sew or machine sew the opening shut. I find its easier to do a small basting hand stitch. That's it! You can open the basting stitch to wash at the end of the school year. You really don't think they will be washed during the school year lol.Helpful Reply

Polly Zieper on Jul 23, 2013Mary, thanks for the ideas. I think I'll make 1 side of the pillow a navy blue sheet, and 1 side denim, since every time I turn around I'm getting emails and regular ads in the paper for bedding sales. I'll be lucky if my son remembers to wash his sheets and clothes, I don't think it will occur to him to wash a cover to a throw pillow... unless there's a girl he wants to impress:)Helpful Reply

Sarah Jackson on Jul 24, 2013One easy kind of pillow is to take a leg of the jeans and cut it off, put a bolster pillow form inside. hem the cut edge and tie rope or sturdy ribbon (like grograin.. spelling?) around each end.. so it looks kinda like a tootsie roll. It looks good on the bed and can easily be untied and tossed in the wash.Helpful Reply
