When I saw a wooden cake stand base at the thrift store...one without a glass dome...I knew it would be PERFECT for repurposing! So grab some sweet tea, and let's relax on the porch with a game of tic tac toe.
Check out the super easy way I "dyed" my game pieces in my blog post tutorial!

Avert your eyes...it's topless!! But really, what can you do with a wooden cake stand base that has no top? Why, repurpose it, of course!
With the lazy, hazy days of summer here, I decided to make something to leave on our back porch...perfect for when friends come over for some R & R. Or friends with kids! So, first I painted it (to seal out it's previous life)...
And instead of trying to paint straight lines for a tic tac toe board, I used washi tape instead! Oh my gosh, so much better than painting!
And for game pieces, I decided to use vintage miniature crocheted doilies for the "o's" and lace ribbon for the "x's"! Check out for my full tutorial to find out how I "dyed" them in minutes!
And that was it! It's fun for everyone...a really easy DIY upcycle that anyone can do...and a great way to repurpose that cake stand. Of course, whenever I play tic tac toe now, I want a slice of German chocolate...ha! ;)

Have a question about this project?
why does it need chalk paint?
No question just a suggestion. Lace and doilies are usually available at Goodwill and thrift store for really cheap. Also I would glue a snap plastic envelope to the underside of the cake area to place the playing pieces in for easy access. Love this idea thank you.
how do you keep the washi tape down on the painted part. mine won't stay down i keep pressing it down..
