Peruvian Daffodils Blooming

I purchased these bulbs from Walmart year before last. Only 3 of them came up but I think they are the coolest flower. I wish they all bloomed together like last year. Anyway, here are my first Peruvian Daffodils this year! They remind me of something I might see in a Dr. Seuss cartoon.

Yes, they are exotic looking. Do they take lots of sun or mostly shade? Wow!

@Nancy, they'll take full sun but what they really want is moist soil.

I have them in full sun. One of the few spots in my yard that doesn't have a huge oak looming overhead.

Those are the coolest Daffodils I have ever seen. I really don't care for Daffodils but I would love to have those, they remind me of Orchards.

Teresa D, how long does each flower last? My spider lillies only last ONE DAY.

Hey Sherrie. They last maybe 5 days? I'm trying to remember. I think 3 - 5 days. They are so pretty. I sure am sick of looking at the yellowed stems though. They get really thick and continue to grow after the flowers are gone. Last year, I chopped them down around December. Just got sick of looking at them.

Teresa D, the leaves of your plant look just like the Amaryllis leaves. I can't tell one from the other. We also have horrible huge grasshoppers who love the Amaryllis leaves. Are you bothered with HUGE grasshoppers?

I haven't seen any grasshoppers. These plants are at the edge of my yard, near the mailbox where I get the most sun. I haven't seen any at all anywhere else in the yard though. I've seen praying mantis and other funny looking bugs, but no grasshoppers.

Lucky you having praying mantis who are known to be a form of organic pest control.

Our grasshoppers eat everything & there is no pesticide currently available to kill the adult so you have to knock them off the plant and smack them with a shovel or some other heavy object. I don't step on them - too messy.

eeeeuw. What about birds? Don't they eat grasshoppers? Maybe provide food for the birds that like to eat grasshoppers near the areas where they are the most problem? What else eats grasshoppers? Lizards?

Teresa, the only birds I think will eat the grasshoppers are sea gulls and black birds, maybe crows, but they don't seem to land and shop our market. The lizards are intimidated by the grasshoppers. I'm hoping maybe the black snakes will like them, but I've not seen one eat a grasshopper yet.

Sherrie, I've learned to always attack them while perpendicular to their bodies!!

Becky H, I don't care how you attack them, you then must squash them with something. My broom gets them on the ground, then the hard part is killing them and that's where the shovel comes in handy. I guess I didn't do it perpendicular when they fell within the plant & I couldn't get to them. sad!

Sherrie, when I was a little kid, I used to go through our yard finding grasshoppers and killing them. My favorite weapon was a brick. One time, I dropped the brick on the grasshopper, and his insides squished out and landed on my leg. I was so grossed out, I never did that again. This is why I attack them with wasp and hornet spray. I can't stand the thought of sqashing one again.

Becky H, are you saying wasp and hornet spray kills the grasshoppers? I didn't think anything but a shovel or big shoe killed them.

lol... no worries, Sherrie. I'm fascinated by the apparent nuisance grasshoppers are and the ninja tactics you guys have used to kill them!

Sherry, yes, wasp and hornet spray kills the grasshoppers. If I'd been reverent enough to begin a grasshopper cemetery years ago, I'd be able to show you all the headstones to impress everyone, but there's no reverence in me for grasshoppers.

Teresa D, this is my spider lily & like I said - yours is prettier & lasts for days. This one only lasts one day so I had to rush to get a picture.

Becky H, I will try wasp spray but I don't think it will kill my grasshoppers. I'll keep the shovel nearby.

Cool! @ Sherrie. They do look very much alike. Surely they are related. It's a shame they only last a day though. I guess the saying is true ... "beauty is fleeting"
