I did both and love them. My advice would be to seal with polycrylic. I did polyurethane on a cream color and grey, It yellowed really bad after a year. I had to paint again and used the polycrylic and it held up great. polyurethane is oil based and polycrylic is water based

I painted little frames with chalk paint on my cabinets. I didn't cover them with poly so I write inspirational saying on each, draw pictures for holidays etc.

I painted my kitchen cabinets with Chalk Paint about 4 years ago. They are still going strong. I have also painted many, many other things with it. Here is the link to my blog and the painted kitchen cabinets http://www.artsychicksrule.com/2013/11/kitchen-cabinet-makeover-annie-sloan-chalk-paint.html ... also look under "Project Gallery", "Furniture Makeovers" for my other pieces and info.

If the matte finish is what you are looking for, why use chalk paint and sealer instead of just using matte paint? If what you want is a surface where you can write, then to for the chalk paint, unsealed. My daughter did a wall in her kitchen that she uses to write her shopping list. Friends who visit often leave thank you or funny messages. I painted my fridge door. No need for sticky notes!

I think she is talking about chalk paint, which a kind of crafters paint rather than chalkboard paint which you write on
