Information on this cupboard; style, age, etc?

I am currently working on painting and waxing this primitive cupboard. I love the inset front and side panels and the old hardware. But I'd like to know more. I believe it is made of oak and has mystery holes drilled into its side (airflow?) The front and side panels gives me the indication that this was made for some place inside the house rather than in a garage or storage area-a bit too fancy? I did a Google search and found one or two cupboards on primitive sites but I long for more info. Would this have been hung on a wall? (It's very heavy!) Or could this be the top of a cupboard without its base (there is no indication that it attached anywhere previously?) Any ideas? Suggestions? Information? Sources for more info?

Old cupboard, looking for more information.
I removed the tin from the top, sanded it down (which I believe is oak.) This is now stained a lovely dark walnut.
Old clasp goes well with the primitive style of the cupboard. Deciding if I should wire brush and then paint this or leave as is?
I do love the inset panels on the front of the cupboard.

When I was a child these were used for storing veggies that need to be out of the light and in a cool place such as a back entry. It looks like early 19th century, not sure, but if you've seen the old baking center hutch (search it) storage cabinets the hardware looks similar.

Pamela, thank you for your kind feedback. I've done some more Internet research and most people who have cabinets listed like this call them, antique jelly cabinets or pie safes. One even listed theirs as having"original air holes" which would make sense to keep air coming in with pies etc. Your feedback on the hardware latch is very much appreciated. Thanks

@Laura S. After reading your comment I had to go back and look at it agin. You're right - it does look like the Tardis - should be painted blue.

    What is the tardis?

@White Oak Studio Designs Dr. Who fans know it - It looks like a blue English Police Call Box. I guess in one of the earlier episodes the Dr's space/time continuum machine - which is supposed to take the shape of some local item - got 'stuck' in the disguise of the box. The Dr. (no one knows his real name - not even sure if he remembers it) 'stole' the tardis (in one episode the tardis says she 'took' the Dr.) and has adventures going all over time and space. He usually has at least one companion who comes from Earth. If you like science fiction you might like "Dr. Who." Check your PBS or BBC stations.

That's really funny. It took me quite a while to figure out the Doctor Who/Tardis connection. Finally Goggle helped. The blue paint was coocindental.

Thinking about the metal hinges/lock - wire brush it - if it looks okay, spray it clear to keep it from rusting again - if it doesn't quite look right, spray paint them with gold or bronze (or even some of that 'stone' paint) and spray with clear to protect it.

Yes, I cleaned the hinges and waxed them. I wanted them to look as "original" as possible. Thanks.

This is so funny! I did do a Goggle search and found the tardis mentioned and pictures of what looks like phone booth. So I have an idea of what the conversation has been about, at last!

If you like sci-fi, try Dr. Who. I LOVE this latest Dr. - not sure about the newest one - he looks old. Did I mention if he dies he can regenerate? Never know who's going to be the newest Dr.
