Three photos to remember the next time you think about planting a wisteria.

Yes, this is one plant, growing in a courtyard in the heart of Perugia, Italy. Just image what the root system looks like.

WOW! That sure is a big one. I wonder how old it is? No need for a shade tree with that overhead.

Do you mean to say that is a canopy of branches?!

Douglas, so glad to see you post this. Years back I planted one, not knowing what it would do. Fortunately, before it ever got anywhere near that big, I heard what its potential was and chose to remove it before damage was done. Their blooms are beautiful, but I've really no place to put this and will have to enjoy it from afar.

There is nothing about Wisteria I don't like. The vines and roots are easily guided and it is happy in direct sun light. I live in Bakersfield, Kern County in CA. where anything that provides shade is welcome. Keep in mind to consider where you plant it. We planted along a hollow design brick wall and when the vine had grown enough to be really beautiful it was discovered to be breaking the bricks. Slowley, slowley seperating and spliting them.

That's a good warning, Jannine. Bricks would be no match for a determined wisteria.

Douglas, if you look back at my picture of my shed, you will see a metal arbor with wisteria on it. I have always wanted wisteria, so I planted one from seed. It was only about 3 or 4 years old but I was already tired of trimming it back a couple times a year, so I pulled it all out. I can't believe the branches on the one you have pictured! ...»

So, instead, this summer I think I will do clematis in its place.

Yes I too think Wisteria is awesome . So much so that I planted 3 around a pergola. Fortunately for me the spot should not be harmed by the root system but I wish I would have stayed with one plant, as now I must cut back endlessly.

I can online imagine, Sharon. I suspect three wisteria would cover a small city.
