Jeanette S on Jun 10, 2012I am assuming it is one of those built in types? Measure inside depth and pick up several vases at the Goodwill or thrift store. Go to the craft store and purchase some decorative "sticks" and fill the vases with them, set vases in box and fill in with bubble wrap or wadded newspaper, topping it off with moss that can be purchased at the craft store or in a floral shop. You can find all sorts of these from barkless and bleached to painted to bamboo. Have fun!Helpful Reply

Marianne on Feb 06, 2015I had a built in ...chest high from the floor up as a divider...I went coastal in my living room and wanted to keep the same flavor...it had a drop in box for real plants...I filled the whole thing with Styrofoam to take up space and then poured sand over the whole thing...put some pretty seashells in it and everyone loved it...so did iHelpful Reply

Debi53 on Mar 13, 2016What about filling it with some type of pebbles to fill almost to the top. (Look in the garden section of Lowe's or HD rather than a craft store to save $$.) Then fill with various chunky candles. You can wedge the candles down into the pebbles to keep them level and secure. Another idea: Fill with sand almost to the top and have a piece of wood cut to fit snugly on top. (The sand can be removed if you want to do something different at a later date and the wood "shelf" will not entice your cats.) Paint or stain the wood. Then use this as a display area for pottery, candlesticks, bird cages, sea shells--in other words, what ever you want to show off. By not putting your wood level with the top of the planter, you leave a slight edge above the shelf which protects your display from falling off and crashing down the stairs. You could also stack books inside and use them to support your decorative items.-no shelf or sand needed.Helpful Reply
