Are you ready for the next heavy rain, the next flood?
This simple guide to flood preparation tells you about flood insurance, emergency kits, ways to protect your family and property before a flood, and tips on evacuation.
According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) floods are one of the most common hazards in the U.S.
Basements are specially prone to flooding, not only due to storms, but also plumbing accidents and sump pump malfunction.
When it comes to flooding there is no 100% safe zone. According to FEMA, approximately 25 percent of flood insurance claims filed every year come for homes and apartments in areas of low-to-moderate flood risk.
A few inches of water in the basement can mean tens of thousands in damages, specially if you have a finished basement.
Typical homeowner's insurance doesn't cover flood damage, and even flood insurance has coverage limitations when it comes to basements.
Although a sump pump probably won’t help to dispel water from a tidal surge, it may help with less severe flooding, such as after heavy rains when the water table rises above the basement floor.
Having at least one battery-operated backup sump pump will help keep the basement dry in case of power outages. Triple pump systems like the one in the picture, greatly reduce the odds of a basement flood during heavy rains.
