When we painted our dining room after moving in, I opted not to prime since the color difference wasn't big. It turned out to be a very time consuming mistake.

Seidman Paperhanging on Jul 25, 2013I am a professional painter/paperhanger. You have to use a primer-sealer all the time. The primer-sealer prevents bleed through and gives the top coat something to hold onto rather than your walls acting like a sponge. This extra step makes the paint more washable and last longer. I like Zinsser's 123 primer-sealer.
