Tiling kitchen back splash with glass tile

Do I need to replace the regular wall board behind the sink with something that is water proof before I install the glass tile? The counters are already installed.

I didn't and it has been up for about 8 years. After you grout it make sure you put a sealer on it.

Thanks Sheri, I am worried that mold will happen even if .i seal the grout but I won't know about it because it will be invisible behind the tile. Even if I seal the grout some little crack could happen and water could get behind the tile. I live in earthquake land. Am I worrying too much?

you could paint the wall with kiltz first then put up the tile. I live in Texas and we get cracks in the walls well everywhere. I think it will be ok. you can reapply sealer once a year if it will make you feel better.

I wouldn't change the wall board. You should be fine sealing it after you grout it. Kils isn't a bad idea though

RMJ and Sheri, Thanks for your responses. I guess that is what I will do use the Kilz. You both mentioned the same thing.

No, you don't! just make sure to sue a mortar that is good for a "wet" area...altho really, how wet will it get? Use a good grout and, after it is dry, go back and check it. It is surprising how ofter spots get missed. add grout if necessary. Clean up the excess and then allow to dry. I often use a small paint brush to apply sealer so as not to get it all over the glass if using glass tile. Kilz isn't even necessary.

I used to work for a tile installer. He told me that you need to put the 'green board' on the counter, if tiling IT. For the wall just regular drywall is fine.

re glass tile: When you use regular tile you make grooves in the thinset or mastic with the tile trowel. When using glass tile, flatten the ridges in the thinset, or they will show after the job is completed.

I really appreciate all the feed back. Wallboard is ok. Use Kilz, make sure the thinset is smooth because of the glass tile and make sure it is water proof. Then seal the grout and be sure to cover all the grout, use a small paint brush with the sealer. OK anything else? Now all I need is the time to do it. Thank you all so much for your help.
