The beginning of my garden cupola

Cleared a large circled area and turned over the dirt and added soil conditioners. Have now planted 13 cannas bulbs (can not see) and staked out a small circle to use as a guide for my round cupola. Purchased a concrete statue of little boy kissing a little girl. The statue will be centered in the middle

This is my cleared spot for the beginning of my new garden. This was probably the hardest part.

These are the shutters I'll be using to make my round cupola. I'll have a total of 6 shutters that will be hinged together. Added new mesh screening to 4 and the other 2 will have a sheer fabric

I'm excited to see how mine will turn out. Have a design in my head, let's see if I can put it together on a small budget. Limited amount of help.

Ok ladies, I'll do my best-Terry M- Did you seal your wood since it's exposed to the weather? If yes, what did you use ? I have polyurethane on hand-wonder if I can use that ? Any thoughts ?

No, you can not use polyurethane. You need to go buy an outdoor sealer. And no, I did not seal my windows because I didn't care if they rot down...I will just make another or something else, but that is the way I am. I did build a square form from pressure treated wood that the base of the windows are screwed into, so the windows don't actually sit on the ground. Then I just use exterior paint to paint the windows when needed.

@TM: This is sooo Xciting!! Terry you now have a an adopted project to your credit - not that this hasn't been the only one. But for sure it has been one of THE MOST TALKED ABOUT!!! The beautiful part is that everyone can take the basic idea and then expand it with what they have on hand and show their own creativity & personality!!

I THINK YOU SHOULD SEND SHERRY YOUR CUTE HANDY DANDY HELPER. Sherry, I bugged Terry for ages ...»

til she finally shared a pic of him san't wait to see the progression and the final. You're gettin fancy w/curtains 'n everything!!

Learned that stautues are not always as sturdy as you may think- Mine broke (the boy kissing the little girl) in the middle of our work today. Purchased another so changed the theme. Good news-our local vendor agreed that the first statue should not have broke- So.... I got another one

    as a even swap.

    • This shows the wrong 1st statue-broke and had to get different one. The circle is not perfectly round so this needs work and any ideas ??? Share ideas and changes and/or improvements. I'm very open to suggestions.

Project day -Saturday 6/16/12- Shutters being hinged, rocks being moved, flowers being planted. Re-using old fire pit for large bowl planter. Buying a different statue. Roofing & lots of detail work to follow.
    • Adjusting the shutters to the position-Positioned the rocks around-Trying to decided how big to make the opening.
    • Selected the flowers & potting soil & organic topsoil. Using snowball white geraniums and mixed annuals

Making a circle with shutters & then making circle with rocks. Had to pick spray paint color-so I chose bronze to match the bronze solar lights. Layed garden plastic under the new topsoil & cut so I could install my flowers on the inside without having to bother with unwanted grass. Had to make a run get new statue, then have someone bring over dolly and unload. Too heavy for me !!! LOL neighbor and son had to get involved. Placed statue and added more flowers. Finished round flower bowl ...»
& closed up the circle in the front area-Placed 3 solar lights then spent the next hour cleaning up all the mess. That's all for today !! but would really like feed back or suggestions. Thanks for looking.

Different angle- Need some finishing ideas- Here's my thought- Add 3 small crepe myrtles between the project and the fence. Or add one of those big free standing umbrellas to top off instead of roof. Add a sitting area. Possible lattice work. Add more solar lights to the sides or the back. Would you add different colors. Open to any suggestions.
    • This statue is taller and it has a place of sitting potted plant. Since I've selected bronze as my spray color-Should I have a bronze roof and if so, any special suggestions?

Sherry I think it's looking awesome!! The only thing about not adding a roof is that then it isn't actually a Pergola anymore. But, sometimes things begin to evolve and develop a mind of their own as to how they want to be. I think this is absolutely charming just the way it is.

thanks for the kind words. Will have to think on the roof. I have no clue what to do. I'm stumped !! The statue ended up being taller than the first one. So my plans went out the window. I'll just see whatever comes to me. LOL !!
