William on Jul 29, 2016Sand the door to remove any flaking paint and gloss. The plastic trim may not be removed and you don't have to. If you can remove the lockset do remove it. Prime with KILZ or BIN primer. Then paint with your color. If you want to paint the trim a different color, tape it off with blue painters tape after priming the door. Once the door is painted and dry, Tape around the trim and paint the trim.Helpful Reply

Sherry Hermreck on Jul 29, 2016Other than use any old paint...Sherwin Williams carries an "alkyld" paint that is tough as the old enamel paint. I used it on my kitchen cabinets and it IS good!! It will stay on longer than regular paint. Don't forget the priming step - it's important!Helpful Reply

Dee on Jul 29, 2016I agree with William and Sherry. Priming and lightly sanding is a must. I would also wash the door down with a degreaser or some dawn. Make sure it is dry before painting. This can all be done without taking down the door. You can do it the day before and then just wipe the door off the morning you are going to paint it. SW alkyld paint is wonderful. If the door is metal, you could use Rustoleum spray paint, but still prime. Rustoleum comes in many colors, it would be harder to paint the trim a different color if you used spray paint. I used it on my metal door and it has lasted for years. Rustoleum also has a metal primer. Spraying would be much easier than using a roller. Yes remove the lockset and you can even spray paint that a metal choice of color. I did mine in brushed nickle. Be sure to put a key in the lock before spraying.Helpful Reply
