Faux Marble Family Room Fireplace Re-Do

We took an outdated 80's fireplace, stripped and started over. My husband built a surround out of MDF and used Fiberglass to reinforce and smooth out edges. We changed the fireplace out to firetubes and used fire glass instead of gas logs, and I coated the surround in white venetian plaster, tinting it for multiple layers to give the look of carerra marble, then used a feather to add veining. It's polished and shines like marble, and is even cool to the touch, and I even fooled one of my subs who handles marlble and granite every day.

Total cost of project - $150, including materials, fire tubes and glass, but my fireplace sub from my business installed the tubes as a favor for my personal home, which saved us about $100, and my husband's talented carpentry skills to design and create the surround with difficult angles made the project!

What Leslie D failed to mention is the the 5 or 6 coats of Venetian plaster is what really makes this piece work.

LOL...after managing construction projects all day, I don't do nearly as much of the physical labor in our house as he does, but he points out all the time that I need to drop my supervisor hat at the door with him...that's so tough for me since I've been told I'm a wee bit of a control freak.

Talent, good taste, no fear of tackling a job...........makes for a successful project. You two have done a great job!! Wow! Have you rebuilt/redesigned your entire house? Was all this in preparation for the visit from the MIL? If that's how to get things done around the house, I'd invite my MIL over every other week!!

Thanks, Becky. We have been working on this house for 4 years now....very slowly. I lost my job as a Construction Manager with a very good company right after we bought and gutted the house. I started my own business, and in the Vegas economy for building right now, money is tight, so we've nickle and dimed our remodel as we can. We've almost finished the downstaris (kitchen, family room, living room/dining, laundry and office are done, with just a powder room and hallway to go), then ...»
we'll start on the upstairs. Guests have become accustomed to sleeping in a construction zone (our guest BR has a bathtub stored in it...LOL). The MIL's visit basically prompted me to clean up and finish some small unfinished projects. I'm thankful for our visitors. After 4 years of nit-picking the work, it keeps us motivated!...

one question -- breaking code by having combustible material so close?

Beautiful. I did that treatment to a built-in dressing table and when we were showing the house to sell it later one of the prospective buyers ask where he might get the same marble to replace the bathroom counters. LOL Did I love that!

Thank you, all! Venetian Plaster is a non-combustible material and actually helps keep a fire contained as a coating and stands up very well to heat. With the fire tubes vs. a wood burning fireplace, there are no embers or "popping". I had the same concerns, but after checking local code and consulting with my fireplace subcontractor, we are within code.

Becky H., your post is right on. You can't be afraid to tackle a project. Just go for it. I had never done faux work before, and it took me many more coats than I thought it would. Worst case scenario if it didn't work would have been to sand everything off and cover it with mosaic tile.

Leslie, the way I look at a challenge is there's always a first time..........and then, I dive in.
