Surprise Stair Risers - a Birch Forest

Who expects to see a birch forest on the stairs? See how I built and painted these former construction stairs to make a surprise, seen only from below.
We lived for several years with our rough construction stairs before I built "new" ones using reclaimed stair treads.
Repaired old fir treads
I painstakingly fixed the damaged treads.
We built drawers into the bottom three risers
The stairs as seen from above
Whitewashed the treads and painted a navy stripe along each edge
After measuring, cutting and sanding the risers, I took them into my studio to paint a forest with acrylic paints.
The bottom risers sport the 10 provincial and 3 territorial floral symbols of Canada.
Glued and then nailed the risers in place, for minimum squeekiness.
As we walk up the stairs, we see sky behind the trees.
Finished the treads with Bona's hard-wearing commercial clear finish.
Suggested materials:
  • Reclaimed stair treads and risers   (Craigslist)
  • Leftover acrylic paint

This is amazing from the art to creativity! Did you put runners on the drawers? What do you keep in them?
