Faux Fall Decor

A few years ago I had received the new Fall Issue from The Country House
and was flipping through it when a bowl of rustic apples and pears caught my eye. I liked the rusty stars on them, but $15.99 for 4 put the brakes on!
I started thinking. How can I make these?
I new I had Dollar Tree faux apples and pears in my Treasure Pile
I dragged out some supplies that I thought would do the trick.
The faux fruit
my spice mix
paint
craft knife or scissors
and of course..
Mod Podge had to be included!
I knew I would need a star stencil so I cut one out of their catalog (just happened to be the right size ;)) traced it onto a piece of paper and cut it out.
I coated the fruit in Mod Podge and the dredged them in the spice mix. Then let dry thoroughly.
When dry I coated them in Mod Podge again to keep the spices mix from falling off.
Let them dry again thoroughly for a few hours then just held on the stencil with my fingers and painted the star on with copper craft paint
I think they turned out pretty darn cute. No they aren't the same color and
the star is painted on, not attached, they are my version and a heck of a lot cheaper ♥

Materials I used for this project:

  • Faux fruit   (Dollar Tree)
  • Spice mix   (mix your own - cinnamon, nutmeg, ground coffee, etc)
  • Paint & Mod Podge   (Leftover from other projects - Walmart has it though)

I've done this on battery operated candles. Just don't cover the battery compartment on the bottom.

truly dig this idea, I have a beachy theme going through my home wondering how I could get away with doing something similar with fruit or another item/s. Really cute and not hard, which I really like.

You could use sand instead of the spice and stencil on beachy images in aqua or whatever color you choose. I've used sand before on other items, works out pretty good too. Love mixing sand with glue to mold it into what i need (note sand along window bottom) - beach themed bath ;)

BRAVO!! I'm also a Dollar Tree devotee -- (never can go in there w/o finding something i just MUST have that minute)! - so will go p/u some faux fruit - (I know I recently saw some there but was already in line and didn't have time to go back -- today I will)! -- and this w/b my next project -- also noted a reply @ using sand/glue to sculpt -- that idea will DEFINITELY go on my to-do -- (Boy, is THAT list ever getting long)!! And just as a btw, I like YOUR version better -- I love when an item is given a second chance by being repurposed!

I'm starting to feel the need to get my fall decorations going. I would love to see a lot of DIY ideas. I have MS and on a very short budget but I love to keep my hands and brain busy. Love the fruit idea. My favorite fall & winter scent is apples & cinnamon 😊😊
