Potting Bench

When we replaced the old front door on our 100 year old home, I couldn't bring myself to throw the old one away. This is how we transformed it into a potting bench with repurposed lumber and few new bits and pieces.

    The sink is the original one from the kitchen in the house, salvaged from the cellar.

    I installed wire mesh into the window space and added this cross section so I would have a place to mount an old rake head for a tool rack.

    The bench is in heavy use already.

    My ex was very oppositional and this was not the only time he did something like that. It was pretty much ALL the time. He was not like that before we were married - he was quite agreeable then. Even though I have moved since then I would still love to be able to dig it up and bring it here. Hugs back.

    Sondra & Denise, I think some men are so agreeable to gain your trust and love...then wham, once they got ya, they let the true colors shine through!! I've got one that throws out anything HE thinks we don't need...good thing I keep old stuff too...:)

    I agree, Jan. It's like a contest. I thought honesty was the best policy but when I told him what I wanted to do or what needs to be done, he would do the total opposite. I'd be so flabbergasted. Fortunately not all people are like that.

    This is absolutely adorable. I love to see re-purposing done in such a tasteful way.

    You could hook a garden hose up to the faucets underneath for water. Pvc pipe painted for a drain.

    No, I could not. I have a need for the water to be available to water both my front and backyard. This is the only faucet we have and it is just as easy to just use the hose with a nozzle. Put I do plan on a drain this summer. It has just been draining into a bucket.

    I see no reason this couldn't be hooked up to an outdoor faucet, and simply use a bucket for drainage. I have this same type of sink in mt apt. and a clawfoot tub too! One of the reasons I rented it.

    It absolutely could be, though the fixtures were long gone. However, I have only ONE spigot and watering is high priority

    Dear Sondra + Jan.

    . about those men... Get this.. I had a big old red porcelain farm style hanging lamp.. red mind you.. not the green. I had it for a pretty long time. I once turned it upsidedown for a beautiful planter and had plants in it, then I saw how expensive and rare the big red kind were and cleaned it up and had it in the yard. It also mysteriously 'disappeared'. I know where it went.. but why ...»

    would someone purposelessly pick THAT to toss? I only hope someone found it and treasures it! I love giving life to old things. I don't get it why that is a crime? I wish we could talk..

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Another occasion he tossed a bunch of old barbed wire, that I had found on the side of the road...It was a bunch of rusted neat stuff..I had it hungg on wooden posts in my yard. They looked good there!
    I thankfully found them all in a dumpster near my house before the trash man came. I couldn't believe it! I got most of them out with the help of two good friends. They are so awesome.the barbed wire was too.. Hugs again... Twiggs
    I love it! Right down to the color. You did an outstanding job on this. I see you're from Broken Bow. Do you remember Ivan Ferguson, Jr?
    Jenni, we are transplants. Nebraska natives from the eastern part of the state returned after 15 years in South Dakota, so we don't know too many people.
    Hi Lori. I'm unable to send you a private message because we aren't following one another, but I'm wondering if I might have your permission to use the photos of your potting bench for a short feature I'm writing for Gwinnett Magazine near Atlanta. You will be credited, of course. Thanks very much!
    Do check out Barb Rosen's page here on hometalk.com - she salvaged one of these sinks from a garage sale and attached it to the side of her home too. She uses it to pot too, but she also turned it into a fountain! The water recirculates through the spigot! Very cool. (She can also be found at ourfairfieldhomeandgarden.com.)
    Lori, go to Home Depot and get the attachment for your faucet that lets you attach TWO hoses. One for your potting bench, and one for your yard. Or,Home Depot online has them for three or four dollars. I have them on both my outside faucets.
    Yes the attachment that lets me run a house to front yard and the back yard...done. Let me say again, two yards, one faucet.
