Painting truck tires

Carole on Aug 05, 2013Whatever you do use, make sure to use the appropriate undercoat first. I spray painted a tyre for the back yard and used a spray paint and it only lasted a couple of months before the paint was wearing off. If you want the tyre to be very visible - avoid using red paint. The reason is that some people (usually men) suffer from colour blindness (my hubby is one of them) and if you put a red tyre on green grass you would think that would be highly visible right? My hubby cannot see red against green background due to his colour blindness. Colour blindness is more common than you might think. I believe it has something to do with the rods in the eyes - something either defective or missing so red and green just merge and look similar like a brownish colour. I would paint the tyres a bright yellow for visibility. Good luck with it.Helpful Reply

Carole on Aug 06, 2013Kathy, that is a good one. I would check with your local hardware store. Depends what you want to topcoat with. Hardware store can advise you on the product that will have the most staying power for outdoor use on the rubber tyre. I used a spray paint with no undercoat, but if you use spray paint, they are generally oil based, so you would need an oil based undercoat. You should never apply oil based paint over a water based undercoat. Interestingly you can go water based over oil, but not oil over water based. It yellows the oil based topcoat for some reason.Helpful Reply

Barbara on Aug 07, 2013I took my grandkids to lowes and let them choose their favorite color to paint their own tires. I told the man at the paint counter what i was doing and he mixed up each of them a quart of paint. He used a satin with a primer in it.I just went with what he recommended. He was very helpful and the kids had a great time! Time will tell if the paint lasts on the tires.Helpful Reply

Kathy on Aug 11, 2013thanks Barbara I'm not sure if my grandson is too young or not. I guess I can just put some old clothes on him & let him give it a try to see how he likes it (he's 2 1/2) it's not like he's going to hurt anything :)Helpful Reply
