Janet Pizaro on Aug 19, 2016The ear wigs are a sign of spider mite or aphids. I have found some useful articles. plantclinic.cornell.edu/factsheets/daylilyrust.pdf and homeguidessfgate.com/rid-earwigs-daylillies-55976.htmlHelpful Reply

Pamela Knott on Aug 20, 2016I'm going to add some info to my original question here: they are not eating the leaves but seem to come out of the base of the plant when I pull the dead leaves and stems out (or off) of the plant. I'm afraid to look at the root system! But I will today. I believe they are eating whatever is eating the root system (I can't think of what the little bulbs are called). So aphids?Helpful Reply

Cindy Thomas on Aug 20, 2016It sounds more like a fungus issue. Aphids are visible, and would be up and down the stems. Day lilies can get a fungus which lasts all summer. Try a fungicide next spring that contains sulfur, azoxystrobin (Heritage) or chlorothalonil (Daconil or Pathguard) help to protect new foliage from infection. If the " bulbs" have signs of rot, remove the infected part. There's a drench we use in our greenhouse - I'll get the name and give you once I find out in an hour or so. In the spring you may need to thin and separate your lilies if they are too close. Another option is to physically dig one up, put it into a large plastic garbage bag and take it to the most reputable garden center that carries perennials. NOT a Home Depot or lowes. ( the bag is so you don't infect their plants. ) find the expert, ask them to inspect it for you. You may loose that one plant by digging it completely up, but you"ll save all the others. Hope this helps.Helpful Reply

Margie Hood on Aug 20, 2016i use 5 dust wich use to be 7 dust.. they took out 2 components that were a danger to us or environment... i cant remember which one...you can buy 5dust at any local dept store..walmart,target etc....get a mason jar..poke holes in the lid with a nail and fill the jar with the dust ,or whatever you have you can use to store it and sprinkle it over your flowers and around them...I use it on everything (plants or flowers) i even keep a line of it sprinkled around my house..its good for everything from aphids, ants, and even scorpions, thats why i use it around my house even sprinkling it through my cracks on the deck..its safe for us but not these pests...you can put it right on your vegetables ...you wont have problems if you use this..my mother swore by it and now so do iHelpful Reply

Gaetane on Aug 20, 2016my Dad had the same issues in his flowers with the earwigs...He took a piece of wood, like a 2x4 and maybe 6'' long and drilled holes about 3'' into the wood...the earwigs go in and can't back out...you have to then shake them out, he would have a bucket with water, and he would drown those little suckers....it worked Great!!!Helpful Reply

Brenda D on Aug 20, 2016I haven't had trouble with earwigs on my lilies, but the red lily beetles will completely destroy them. I got behind in weeding a couple of years ago, and when I found my lilies, they were really gross--all that was left were slimy, brownish stems. Apparently the lily beetles eat them, and then defecate on them, which destroys them. Have to be very diligent at picking them off and destroying them every day, or they will start eating holes in the leaves and leave lots of little tiny eggs under the leaves.Helpful Reply

Brenda Dasti on Aug 20, 2016Red lily beetles can be seen easily . They eat and destroy even in the day time. The best thing I found for them was to catch them and drown them in soap and water. We don't have all the chemicals anymore in Canada so it makes it more difficult.Helpful Reply

Colin L Deans on Aug 21, 2016Hi there. I live in New Zealand where we also have trouble with Earwigs eating some of our plants too and a good way to get rid of the earwigs is to wet some crumpled up newspaper and place it inside an earthen plant pot and lay it on its side where the earwigs are. You will find in the morning that the earwigs love the damp newspaper and crawl into it in the pot. Take the pot into the laundry and shake and open the newspaper where the earwigs will all fall out. You can run the hot tap on them to kill them or just wash them down the drain with cold water. It works wonders.Helpful Reply
