Redoing my countertops

Hi! I finally took the plunge...or should I say hammer and started busting out the backsplash. It's about done. Didn't take long at all. The most timely was cleanup.
My question....Why is the countertop harder to bust then the backsplash? I took the hammer and pounded on a counter tile...nothing...not even a crack. I am afraid now to try to bust it out...that it may be too hard on my body...I'm no spring chicken! I don't mind the work, but I think this is to much.
Do you know why it was so hard? Should I just level it with cement then paint and put tons of casting on top? Thank you for any help you can give.

If your countertop is in sound condition you don't have to take it out. Although I would recommend hiring a professional Decorative Artist (or Google countertop overlay professional) you can get a DIY kit and do it yourself. The countertop will not be as durable or maintenance free as a professional can do, but you can get some great results yourself. The counter top tiles were probably installed with thinset rather than tile adhesive like the walls. Which is the right way. You can try to chisel out the tiles. Once you you chisel one out the rest should be easier. Use a chisel to crack one tile, then chisel it out at an angle. Make sure you use gloves and eye protection.

The back splash has drywall behind it so it gives more when you hit it. The counter has wood under it and doesn't bend as much. That would be my guess.

probably easier to remove countertops intact and do new laminate or granite top
