Use Your DIY Chalky Paint as a Primer

I have been making my own chalk paint for years, however last year I found a new use for it. Used as a base coat it makes a great primer. No need to sand or strip. We've all painted pieces red, and probably have used a black or gray primer underneath. Imagine taking a little of that red paint, mixing it with some Plaster of Paris--great RED primer!
Finish it off with latex paint, a poly product, or your favorite wax.

I love the finish on the gray table. I am currently using semi-gloss paint mixed as a chalk paint to do my mahogany coffee tables. I sanded a bit and already have one coat of chalk paint on. I plan a second coat. Can I do my finishing coat with just the paint in order to get this finish, or, should I satin varathane over the chalk paint?

    Thank you, Anne

Hi Gail, I love the finish on the gray coffee table. I am on my first coat of almost white chalk paint on my mahogany tables. I sanded a bit so it is applying well. I plan on a second coat of chalk paint. My question is to get that same finish as your gray table, should I apply just a regular coat pf same colour paint (its semi-gloss) or should my final coat be a satin varathane to give it that diamond finish?

    I love your work!

    Thanks, Anne

Thanks for posting! This is really a no brainer! Your way gives the "no prep" that chalk paint is known for, but a latex top coat finish! (also cheaper with more available colors!) I am not a true fan of chalk paint because of the wax....sounds like a lot of work to me. I have always used Minwax stain as a antique medium with great results, just my personal preference.
