Danielle on Aug 26, 2016I built my office out of the Ikea Algot system. Going vertical gave me 22 linear feet of work area/storage in a 60" footprint. Computers, whether desktop or laptop, can all be connected to a single keyboard, monitor and mouse by using a KVM switch. You will be able to switch between machines using either a keystroke combo or pressing a button on the switch depending what model you get. Printers can go on the shelves, they don't need to be at desktop height. You can slide a 2 drawer file cabinet underneath the worktop and still have plenty of legroom. Office supplies can easily be organized on the shelves. Install a piece of pegboard as a backsplash to the worktop and not only hide cords behind it but use hanging containers or hooks for holding more office supplies. Best part is you can build the whole thing in a couple of hours for around $150-$200. Check out this link: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/.... It's similar to mine except I only had room for 3 sections, and I went all the way to the ceiling for the shelves so I had another entire row of shelving. I put my desktop on a low shelf under the worktop on the left and a 2 drawer file cabinet under the shelf on the right, the rest of the space is perfectly adequate for my feet. I put a narrow shelf up about 6 " to set my monitor on so it was at a more comfortable height for viewing, that opened up more area on the worktop also and more storage space since I took the narrow shelf across all 3 sections. If you have a mix of desktop and laptop computers consider stacking them under the worktop on their own shelves. Using a KVM switch with a laptop means you don't have to have the laptop open, you just adjust the power settings to stay on when the lid is shut. Organizing is easiest when you think vertical.Helpful Reply
