Adding Fall To A Summer Container Garden

A great way to extend the life of your existing summer container gardens is to remove the straggly, past their prime plants in late summer and replace them with fall mums or kale. It keeps the planters interesting for a few more months.
I found this planter that contained Purple Fountain Grass, Coral Bells and a petunia on drastic clearance at Lowes. I just replaced the petunia with a mum and it's good to go for a few more months here in Ohio. More details can be found on the photos below or in my blog post.
I started out with a clearance summer planter from Lowe's - my Lowe's had them for $5, originally $24.98
It contained a Purple Fountain Grass (Pennisetum setaceum 'Rebrum'), Circus Coral Bells (Heuchera 'Circus' PPAF) and an ugly, stringy, past its prime, light purple Trailing Petunia (Petunia x hybrida)
I pulled out the petunia and replaced it with a garden mum.

Even if it calls itself an annual,I 've found.that if I plant them in a "protected" space, they usually come back the next Spring.I have tons of annuals that not only re-seed but come back from the roots. I realize Central Ms. doesn't always have harsh winters but it does get pretty cold and frosty.I i have a tendency to 'cheat'- I harvest seed and rake over the ground in Feb.,then toss the seed out and tamp some fresh soil over the top. I should've posted some pics this summer but just couldn't find the time.

That's good to know @Sherry Goolsby ! I think I'll plant the grass plant beside the compost bin and see if it makes it through the winter. Worth a try!
