Bonny McDaniel on Jan 11, 2014How high you have the table or seat depends upon what you want and the size of the stumps you can find. If you have to buy the stumps from a wood yard, they are usually eighteen inches, give or take an inch or two. Some might be two feet which might be OK for stools if they are big enough in diameter to keep from tipping over. If you cut your own, I would suggest about twenty inches is good for side tables. And Marine varnish should work OK. Make sure the finish coats really cover well and get into the little crevices so bugs don't get into the inside and eat the wood. Stumps used for potted plants can be any size and variety is usually desired so go from about eight inches to twenty or so inches.
