Dog Run Flooring

We need to construct a dog run out of fencing, will probably be about 10' X 20' or so...any advice on what to do for flooring material? Something that can be hosed of and cleaned easily? Thanks!

Gravel around pavers work well - good drainage is the absolute prime thing here; and non-diggable. Even non-digging dogs will get bored and start digging.

Why have a dog if you are going to pen them up. Sorry, I just don't get that. Maybe someone could enlighten me on that? Maybe there is something I am overlooking?

We had a real nice kennel built from chain link for our two guard dogs, We had it constructed on lawn, so they were cozy! Also a very large house at one end, bigger than most tool sheds. We put straw in and cedar to keep pests at bay. Concrete with a drain built in and sloped so water does not pool is also common. There are dozens of reasons for having a kennel. Dogs run away. Dogs get hit by cars. Some pet owners have allergies so cannot have inside pets, like me. Dogs need to be outside in the fresh air when the family is away, which is far better than being cooped up inside, waiting to be let out to do their business. Not everyone has a fenced yard, so a kennel is a great way to keep your pets safe and healthy. 10x20 is a pretty nice size too.

No matter what you choose, make sure you put out lime to keep down the smell. Our neighbors have 3 large dogs and do not lime...sometimes the stench runs us indoors! No matter if you use concrete, when you hose it down, the runoff needs to be limed! Also, the urine is acid and the lime will make for a better acid balance for your lawn.

Terri, Why do you ASSUME, just because I am putting up a dog run, I am housing my dogs outside? The facts: The dog run is for 15 or 20 mins of exercise a couple times a day for my 3 much loved dachshunds, (2 of which were rescue dogs).... They love to run and play ball among each other and I want to keep them safe from the street!! I would love to be able to walk them, but because I am disabled, this does not happen on a daily basis. My dogs live inside the home with me, even sleeping in my bed and are treated better than most human children. Please do not assume and attack.... you do not know people's individual situations!

Gravel and then a layer of cedar mulch, or the rubber mulch($$). Would be easy to spray off and soft for those Dachshunds rolls..Can you tell I have one.

10 X 20 isn't a dog run. It's a pen. 5 X 50 is a dog run. My neighbor has one 100 feet long that follows the out side perimeter of her yard.

Kudos to you! I will be doing the same for my "girls" 3 doxies when we purchase our home in Michigan. I have been researching materials, and we have settled on artificial grass, they have some high quality realistic looking products that can be hosed off easily and are on a mesh type material so drainage is great.

JUST WENT TO 'HOME DEPO' THEY HAVE GARDEN SQUARES MADE OF RECYCLED PLASIC I WILL USE THIS TO MAKE A WALK FOR IN PASSING WHEELCHAIR OVER BUT COULD BE USED IN DOG AREA.

Do NOT use cedar for any animal! The very part that makes it NOT rot and drive OFF insects--the OIL--is very harmful to animals and can give them severe skin problems and respiratory issues and if they ingest it their digestion can shut down. In fact mulch of any kind might not be the best as the wood can be treated. Since the dogs are not going to live out there small gravel might be the best with pavers or UNtreated wood slabs for variety or those pups who don't like wet paws!

I would suggest small river rock (it's rounded, so no sharp edges). The rock is easy to clean, but you would want to put down some weed fabric first. Artificial turf has decent drainage and is nice looking but will need to be replaced every few years due to wear and tear, whereas the rock won't.

EVERYONE I used river rock once because it was smooth and no sharp edges but never again. It never quite giving off dirt. our dogs were always dirty from it. Today we use sand, gravel with patio block on top .

Never worked for my dogs, but I have known people who paper trained their dogs in the house, then moved the paper outside and trained them to use only one area of the yard which they kept hidden and cleaned up regularly. And the dogs otherwise had the run of the whole fenced yard.

Sealed cement is the best. After having a commercial boarding kennel cement is the only way to go. If you seal it the run will wash right off, but you'll have to do pickup if it's not connected to your sewer system.
