Where would I be able to get some barn wood to make a inexpensive table and bench? I live in Rhode Island. Any ideas?

There are barn sales and auctions held in rural areas. Also sometimes there are ads for free wood on Craigs List etc. Pallet wood can be used just as barn wood

I don't know exactly what barn wood is but, wooden pallets are usually free and great for projects, type in and see what people have made from them.. l've just made a new floor for my shed using them.. Free??..xx

I saw a table made out of barn wood which was beautiful. Not sure about a kitchen table from pallets but I'm open to anything like that. Thank you for the idea and I'll check it out on google. Good for you making a floor too!

Pallets left out for a few years might be a good idea. Trying to find some with some already aging some might be fairly easy. Check businesses and tell them you have a project going and want their worse worn pallets. It's the newer ones that are picked up and recycled.

"Old" barn wood is getting more and more expensive. To get that fantastic gray patina and rusty nail holes takes years of exposure to the elements. So, owners of old barns have wised up considerably. What they have are treasures. Any doubt, take a 1" by. put some nails in it and leave it out a couple of years and it still won't look as aged as you want. But, that said, I truly hope you find some for your project.

Just had an idea. I was out in my yard, looked around and a light went on. Couldn't wait to finish my chore. Go to a fencing company that installs privacy fencing. See of they bring the boards they replace back to their shop. Better yet, drive around and find where where they're replacing split or damaged boards. It happens. (Wish I could give you an old 6'X8' gate. The boards are about 1" by 6" wide. Perfect for a project w/10 year old gray patina, rusty nail holes and all.) See if they'll let you haul off their mess or , if you're not bashful, ask the homeowner if you can have them. After all, they're theirs. Not the fence companies. I hope this works for you.

I have an old barn that fell down, there is plenty of wood. you have to get it yourself though. I live in Massachusetts. That isn't too far from Rhode Island. You will need a truck and a good back and some muscles.

Thank you...I really don't need that much but just curious how far that would be. What city in Mass if you don't mind me asking?

Even old decking can work. Scrub and seal it. Better than new green wood which is recently cut trees. No matter how 'sustainably managed' they say the forrest is, cut wood is still a tree gone. In Tampa they bulldoze houses full of old growth wood, send it to the landfill and build new. Sad.
