Retrieving a buried garden hose

Mary Lou Morin
by Mary Lou Morin
Several years ago we built a deck attached to our house. The deck is about a foot off the ground. We had the deck done in March over an old garden bed devoid of plants (in Pennsylvania) but we failed to retrieve the soaker hose which was buried by an inch or so of soil. One end of the (15' long) hose is exposed - about 4 feet so we know it's in pretty good shape. How can I pull this out without crawling under the deck (yuck! bugs, critters) - I thought about attaching the one end of this hose to a hose connected to our back yard spigot thinking this would help loosen the soil. Any other ideas?

Probably not worth the effort. I would cut it off and buy a new hose. Lots of good sales after labor day!

Not sure whether just the buried hose is just under the deck and there is exposed end outside of the deck perimeter from what you say or if you can just see it under there. If the exposed end is under the deck then I would use a shepherds hook to get it over to the edge. Hooking it to a regular hose and letting it run would loosen the soil but it is kindof a waste of water but it will keep you out from under the deck and the boogie bugs LOL.

I looked at what you sent and here is my response. Number 1 you obviously have not read or heeded my reply that your response is lousy. Number 2. Not everyone has a Walmart near them. 3. Not everyone shops at Walmart. 4. If you look further at that link the price for most sellers is over 16.00 so what happened to your $5.00 that you spouted about. 5. Sad. Sad. Sad.

OK for all you naysayers, the point of this website is to help people not treat them like they are stupid. Most of the entries on the site are taking an item and making it into something else instead of BUYING and PAYING the high dollar for new. In this case, she wants to retrieve the hose that she already has. I hope my suggestion above helps you Mary Lou and also that the naysayers think about "if you can't say anything nice, say nothing at all" Have a great Labor Day.

Alan the price at Target ranges from $9.00-$33.00. What happened to $5.00? She has a perfectly good soaker hose that she can get for nothing but a little work.

I must be a cheapskate too, because I would want to rescue the hose also. I would see if there was a way to connect the visible end to a long pole or "shepherd hook" as mentioned above. after soaking the area, you should be able to pull it "back" towards the other side and it should come out of the dirt. I would not try to pull it "towards" you, you will just stretch out the hose without gaining much ground.

Cheesecake chick is right. If you can hook it up to the hose and get the ground good and wet pulling it in a different direction to move it out of the dirt not thru it. Are the sides or ends open? and what are the dimensions?

The 5 bucks come from my own purchase on E-Bay before we left to come over for my wife's mothers funeral, I bought 2 of them for a tenner plus postage for our neighbour to keep our lawns watered while we are away, you seem to be totally obsessed with my reference to the 5 bucks, rather than the as one other referred to "Joke post" am sorry but we a off on a road trip in a few hour, so our next contact with the internet will be a few days {4} away.
