I'm trying to restore a small side table that was originally gold-leafed but has faded & the paint stripped off of it.

Decide whether it was the gold leaf, the design, the distressed look, or just the size that attracted you to the piece. Then either releaf the piece, releaf to enhance the gold then distress for a shabby chic look, repaint in choice of color(s), distress if desired, or even try a faux wood painting technique on it. You can then make it into any exotic or domestic wood design of your choice. There are several really good books out there on the techniques, check your library, interracial library loans.

The table is darling! I'll include a link to a hometalk post that someone did about how to gold leaf. If you type in "how to gold leaf" at the top of Hometalk's page you'll get lots of ideas! Good luck to you Niddi and I hope your project turns out fabulous! http://www.hometalk.com/diy/bedroom/dressers/how-to-gold-leaf-furniture-8467266...

I think I would have a thin piece of plexiglass cut for the center shape. If it were mine, then I could use some really pretty wallpaper, scrapbooking paper, or fabric, changing out seasonally and or holiday, making it really multipurpose.

A piece of plexiglass to protect the table is a great idea no matter how you decide to finish it.
