Idea's to refurbish a fireman's bed

We have a fireman's toddler bed for our grandson who has outgrown it and we want to repurpose it into something he can use. Any ideas? He already has a big fireman's toybox (fireman theme is the main theme in our house, lol). It comes apart easily, is screwed together. We have thought of a wagon or a small couch but have no clue if that could be done or how hard it would be. Would love to have some more input into it! The baby on it is our Grandson, he is 20 months old and is to big for the bed. It's to cute to sell, we would love to have it be of some use. Suggestions please!! Thanks, Connie

Rather than de-constructing this I would see it you can pass in one to some new owners...It is working perfect as a cool bed and can bring some joy in this same roll to another yongster.

I agree with @KMS Woodworks, it's really a cute bed.

If you can't give it up,and it's made of wood, attach the foot board to the wall for shelves (looks like it's already made for this), and the headboard and sides would make a cute chair or swing.....

@Karen Mortimore Karen that is a great idea. My daughter really wants to keep it and use it for something as she bought it and he only used it a few times and it goes with all of our fireman items we have in the house. I will have to pass that idea on!

My daughter wants to keep it and continue to enjoy it but we don't have the room to store it as a bed and would like to get some use out of it as she paid for it and he was only in a few nights before we realized he was to long for it (he sleeps sideways so it doesn't work)

@Connie Murray perhaps simply putting the side against a wall would be your answer, he would have to lay the long way rather than across......

@Connie Murray Karen has a great idea, but you may be able to just turn the bed vertically against the wall and add shelves - making sure the unit is afixed to the wall as kids do like to climb - save some space on the foot board (being on the floor) for a cushion so your grandson can sit there to look at a book. Or leave lots of space a put an art easel for kids there so he explore his artistic skills. Do update us with a pic or what you do. Thanks for posting.

You could leave the side rails on, build up the height of the tailgate a bit, and add a cushion on the new tailgate, this would turn it into a long chaise lounge without taking it all apart. If there is no room for that, then I would suggest mounting the back half of the truck to the wall as if it is driving through the wall and the front half a couple feet away as it it is coming back through the wall. Once done, one half becomes a tv shelf and the other half becomes a book shelf. Just a thought.

Perhaps build some benches in it, and turn it into a "toy" that his imagination could run away with. :) I like the shelves and chaise lounge idea too! :)

Take out the mattress and make it into a sand box for him to enjoy. You could buy a couple of pcs. of pvc pipe... smallest diameter..... drill holes on the 4 corners and insert pipe so that it curves over the top from end to end. Hem a tarp or canvas pc. on the sides, and slip the pvc pipe thru' it to make a canopy for shade. The canopy can be made from painters canvas, or a shower curtain, or tablecloth. Be sure to cut a pc. of plywood to cover the top to keep cats from using it as a litter box.

These beds make great desks, work areas for arts and crafts. You can add legs to bring it up to the height you need for the child repaint it if you like. I believe i saw one refurbished on Pinterest.

what about sealing it up with a few good coats of poly and adding benches and a "steering wheel" and maybe a short slide out of the back and turn it into a outdoor play spot

I have made little benches out of wood toddler beds. That might be an idea for you.
