I'm new to diy projects... so I basically have no idea and creativity to decorate this headboard. What materials would be suitable and easy to use?

You could recover it. Or you could also recover and tuff it. Your already have the hard work finished all you have to do is drill holes for tuffing or find a material u do like to recover.

Add upholstery nails for added elegance. They come in several colors, sizes, and even shapes!

Tufting would be the best option but if you don't want to do the whole process (which can be pretty daunting!) simply cover this up with a pretty fabric. From the picture you have uploaded, I'm guessing your walls are off-white, so fabric can add a really nice pop of color in the room. Think a punchy yellow for a fun look or porcelain inspired blue and white prints for a more elegant look. You can coordinate your pillows with the fabric and I'm sure your bed would look swoon-worthy. Using a glue gun apply hot glue over those vertical lines and put up the fabric. Fold the excess, glue over the top and tuck it behind the board. Good luck!

Cover with a wonderful looking fabric. It does not have to be expensive at all. If you choose a plain fabric adding upholstery nails of a colour that will compliment the fabric. If you want a picture over the bed it should probably be almost as wide as the headboard.

An easy way to dress up your bed area without touching the headboard would be to buy two very short cafe curtain rods and two sheer curtain panels. Mount the rods up near the ceiling on the wall behind the bed, so that the material would hang half behind each side of the bed. Simple elegance. A couple color suggestions might be white or dark blue curtains.

A fabric slipcover could be a colorful and temporary option, but painting or stenciling a design on could show your creative genius! Good luck. :)

A couple of lovely slipover would be ideal as they could be washed and be completely different for different times for of year. One could be covered in buttons for something different.

A quick and easy alternative to tufting would be to use fabric ribbon in a complementing color in a criss-cross pattern to make diamond shapes. Hot-glue some decorative buttons where the ribbons intersect.

Or, just paint it with chalk paint...stripes, plaid, polka dots...you name it. Very easy.

I looked at Wallmart for chalk paint and I only found small bottles of it in the craft section. Is that what you use? Then does it have to be sealed?

You could reupholster it. The style looks like it wouldn't be too difficult. In Florida the County extension services have classes in upholstery sometimes. Be sure to get the comforter you love and plan to use then pick out a fabric that will go well with it, not too crazy as you might want to change the comforter later.

Tack velcro on the back. Get old duvet cover with nice pattern - or old comforter/quilt. Slip it over the headboard. Measure where the velcro hits the fabric & use new sew tape to put velcro strips on that part of the fabric. Voila - pretty headboard, no sewing and yes - you can do this with almost anything, even a pretty curtain,. Never do anything permanent to a headboard - if it is too flat you can add inexpensive pillows to the inside of the duvet/slipcover to make it softer.
