Algae in my pond

The Garden Frog with C Renee on Sep 05, 2013This is an occurrence in many ponds and is normal. If the growth is too bad there is a PH imbalance~sometimes you can have too much debris or plants or even fish causing an imbalance. Sometimes it can be a lack of sunlight~ponds needs full sun (6hrs or more) and moving water. I see you have a waterfall but that is not always enough. You may want to try and add another water feature at the end of the pond to get more water moving. There are many products on the market and do your homework because if you have fish in there or animals in your yard, you may need to make sure they are all natural. All my fountains the wildlife and my cats and dogs drink out so I just keep them clean. Ponds are a great addition and I have 2 so far but I decided that no longer have plants because of the upkeep. When animals or wildlife can cause PH imbalances as well. Most times I have small goldfish I buy for .25 and keep them in there for mosquito control. I hope this helps.Helpful Reply

IDigPonds.com on Sep 19, 2013What Kind of algae...? If you have an imbalanced pond or extremely hot sun soaked climate. The UV light is great for "green water" algae. Use it as manufacturer specifies for "sterilizer" (not clarifier, clarifier is fine in cooler climates) ...we install & maintain ponds in FL & often have algae issues esp high PH ponds. Remember a UV light creates tiny debris particles when it kills the green water algae and will increase nutrient build up feeding the hair & string algae. The Aquascape Iongen http://shop.idigponds.com/shopexd.asp?id=479&bc=no is the best to reduce unwanted hair algae or string algae. Adding Beneficial Bacteria http://shop.idigponds.com/shopdisplayproducts.asp?Search=Yes&sppp=10 regularly will help reduce nutrient build up. Though Pond clean out once a year is suggested. A good ecosystem in a pond is important.Helpful Reply

Sbeazley on Jul 29, 2015In the fall of last year, I fertilized the grass and flowers with fall fertilizer. In the early summer of this year, I noticed scads of long, algae growing in the pond. I tried everything, realizing that my fish were also being affected. Eventually, I emptied the pond, cleaned it thoroughly and refilled with fresh water. I finally realized that in fertilizing the surrounding area, I had inadvertently transferred some of the fertilizer to the pond water producing the stringy algae. My pond has been fine since.Helpful Reply
