Need to make wood posts out of metal poles

My next major home project involves replacing a very decrepit wire fence with a new wooden fence. Because of the angle of incline for my yard, I can't use pre-made panels or vinyl fence, so I will need to build it myself. The old fence is attached to metal poles that are set in and filled with concrete. I would like to create wooden boxes to slide over them that will turn them into wooden posts. My question is this... What size lumber should I use to make a box (with butt joints) to slide over a 2" pole?

Spheramid Enterprises on Sep 05, 20131x should be fine, with a square "plug" inside with a hole drilled in center , just a flat 1x top and bottom. Then an additional "cap".Helpful Reply

The Garden Frog with C Renee on Sep 05, 2013Spheramid has great advice and Depending upon the look, you could also use the 6' single pickets at Lowes or Home Depot. At Lowes there are 2 different thickness and would do the trick as well. I use fence pickets for many garden/decor projects now because lumber has gotten so expensive.Helpful Reply

Spheramid Enterprises on Sep 05, 2013Sorry, carpenter talk, "1x" is One by, like 1 by 4 or 1x6 , and then ya have 2x which is like 2x4 and 2x6..etc. so make a long box with ends, of either 1x6 or 1x4 and inside have a similar block with a center hole to drop down over the post. Then cap it to keep crud out.Helpful Reply
