Shower curtain suggestions needed ASAP

Beth Marie
by Beth Marie
I'm in a rental property and it came with this lovely wallpaper :) It's in my sons shared bathroom (16, 12, & 4) and I cannot find ANYTHING that would go with it. I thought something white would work but the ones I found are too feminine and their brown, tan ones I've found seemed too busy or too expensive for my kids to ruin!
ANY suggestions?

How about picking up that rusty red? Have you thought about using a clear vinyl liner and finding a curtain panel, maybe in the rusty red color??

I agree with Karen J. S. I know where I live there are discount stores that sell curtain panels for $10-15...sometimes they are on sale for $5, and they look like the same ones that they sell at Walmart and Target, but may just be re-labeled. They have grommets at the top, but you can buy a tension rod and slip it through the grommets. They come in 84/95" lengths.

I see a rust/red in the overlapping plaid. Perhaps something in that shade in a solid. Another thought-- horizontal stripes to make the area appear wider. Good Luck.

Why not try dying the white one you have? Jacquard Products makes great dyes, one for all cotton fabrics, another (iDye Poly) for synthetics. It's available both on line and in better art supply stores. I've used it several times and was astonished how well it worked. DO NOT use your washing machine! You'll need a big old pot and do it on your stove top. The dye is very strong and acts quickly. Be sure to wash it first in hot water to get rid of any sizing that might be on the shower curtain. As for color, I'd go for the burgundy and leave it pulled to the side when not in use.

A cheap plastic liner and I would go with the lighter color to keep the bathroom from looking so dark and closed in. If you don't like a busy pattern, try a flat sheet. If you have a sewing machine that can make button holes, (I am definitely no seamstress myself, and even I can do it!), then if you want more detail, you can add a band of coordinating color across where the tub height is. Coordinating towels will calm down the business of the pattern, and like-color accessories and artwork will help it look more finished.

Big Lots is your friend. They have a great assortment of shower curtains in "masculine" colors. Line them with a cheap-o liner from Dollar Tree. All-in cost could be as little as $10 if you shop Big Lots' sale shelves. :)

If you are interested in inexpensive shower curtains shop at marshalls, t j Maxx, and home goods. You can get name brand products at more than 50% off. I would use a beige/cafe au lait color for the shower curtain. I think there is gray and cranberry/brown in the wall paper, try a light gray shower curtain and use red/cranberry accessories. Hope this helps.

First, ask your son for ideas, race cars, construction equipment themes, etc. Secondly, how old is your son? If nothing else has provided inspiration to stay in school , get a job, and move out, that wall paper ought to do it. Look at it as a blessing of sorts.......

Choose on of the darker colors in the plaid and dye or buy a solid shower curtain. My monitor reads rust and grey tones. Plaid is masculine but if you want to make it a bit more modern...try for a dark grey curtain.

I would go with a charcoal grey and lighten up the bathroom with sepia coloured photos with off white/tan mattes and black frames. You can change out the photos as he grows or just pick scenery if it's shared with guests. You could also use fabric paint on the shower curtain at the bottom to create a colour appropriate line or two to lighten it up. Good luck!

You can find solid dark brown shower curtains. This one looks like it has matching colors:http://www.overstock.com/Bedding-Bath/Lush-Decor-Terra-Shower-Curtain/8549467/product.html You could also use a brown sheet with a waterproof liner.

Hang a second shower rod higher on the wall and use a curtain panel. Use something for a tie-back (maybe colored rope?). The shower "curtain" always stays tied back, the vinyl curtain is just closed when showering.

Use a table cloth or regular curtains hung with ring clips. This way you can also get a fuller look.

Take the curtain down and hang or lay outside. A couple of water balloons with watered down latex in a color they like. Splatter paint it but limit # of balloons used. Let dry for rest of day.

It looks like you have a lot of beige/brown in this bathroom. Because it is for boys, I would pick a gray that works with the gray in the wallpaper. You could use a small grey check or houndstooth, or a solid gray. I would also use gray towels.

I have often used sheets found on sale or from thrift shops to make a shower curtain. You don't need a button hole either. Use curtain tabs that clip on with a plastic liner they look hi fashion. Simple is best.

Use a plain white or clear plastic curtain and cover them up with a cloth curtain made of sheets or even inexpensive curtain panels. You can get a second tension rod and run it thru the channel on a panel or the top hem of a sheet. Sheets can be cut off and a hem turned up with fabric glue or a fusible web product if you don't sew.

What about using rustic stars, wooden bats and baseball framed prints. Maybe a baseball glove ect. for the walls. A plain shower curtain using 1 of the colors from the wall. Go for a vintage baseball look.

•This would create the best eye pop.. You will need to look though, find something( curtians) with lines going downwards, get two shower curtians exactly the same, except one is a slightly different shade,& i am talking about muted greens, one light one darker.. By doubling up the curtians you give an extra flare(yes) look but it becomes automatically bigger, though i suggest to cut both in the centre, so to half them,& place up in accordance one light, one dark, one light & so on..because you have double, there will not be water leakage problems.. *Tip to keep cleaner longer, half a bottle of distilled water into a spray bottle, mix 4 table spoons of bi-carb, add 7-14 drops( you decide on smell) of grapefruit oil (decent aromatherapy oil), shake always well & spray curtians after every few uses. The pop of greens in that hue of a bathroom will change it amazingly,& boys won't mind the right greens.. Plain white, never,& for so many reasons that are more of bad than good, never work. Make that bath area be your focal point.. Then if you want to get a tad more interesting, place the odd small fake green cactus/or plants you can get at a 2 dollar shop... Want something real... Some Air fern is beautiful & can be used with anything if you let your imagination go... Or if you'd like some ideas then ask, i deal with proffesional Arts'n'crafts & especially for rentals, where a number on this site don't like me for (as i help those who want some best advice,& a bit more always:) Happy Crafting M Rã

The first thing that came to my mind when I saw this wallpaper was "Burgundy!" Just a plain burgundy curtain and perhaps burgundy towels. No pattern. I think that would just be too much with all that plaid.

Try using inexpensive drop cloths and move your outer shower curtain up toward the ceiling
  • KC KC on Sep 12, 2016
If you don't have the time for DIY, just take your laptop or tablet into the bathroom and go to someplace like Bed Bath & Beyond for instance and scroll through the shower curtains. I would choose either maroon or deep green colors and see if there isn't something that strikes up a nice pairing with the wallpaper. I know colors aren't always what they seem on a website but you could get an idea. It doesn't have to be a plain one either. You might see something with a subtle stripe or a fade from light to dark. Just sit and stare at the wall and the websites, something will hit you.

I love the burgundy idea with the matching towels. Think, no grungee towels to bleach!!!!!

When I look at the pictures that are from a distance. I see the blue/gray color popping out at me. I'd try that color for a boy.
  • Goldie Goldie on Sep 12, 2016
I instantly pictured using the burgundy/russet color in the wall paper for the curtains and as a valance over the shower. The darker red/brownish tint will make it masculine and ageless. Try a DIY dye job on plain white flat twin sheets, then see a hem and rod pocket and gather as you hang it. Or simply buy sheets in that color (or shop Goodwill and second hand shops for inexpensive white sheets). I think if you stick with the russet color (reddish burnt orange) all the boys will be satisfied and you can accent with dark green to add pop. Just my thoughts. Hope it helped and good luck. Post pics of what you decide ok. 😀

I think I would go with trying to bring out the small green strips in the pattern. It shouldn't be too hard to find a similar green shade and if it doesn't match the color perfectly, there's little enough of it in the wallpaper that it won't look odd. If you try to match one of the more prominent colors, the color would have to match better. Good luck and have fun decorating!

I immediately thought of burlap. Idk how expensive it is, but you could easily make one. Then you could tie in the burgundy color by adding a stripe or even a burgundy or dark red shower rod. Good luck!

Hi Beth Marie, I'm glad you liked the idea! I'm not a crafty person, though I so wish I was. It was the look of the texture on the wall paper that made me think of burlap and it's definitely masculine enough! My husband and I currently live in a fully furnished rental and it makes me crazy that I can't change anything. I love this site because there are so many great ideas, and when we do finally find a place to buy...watch out!! ( I'll be keeping my mom busy lol!!)
  • Irene Irene on Sep 13, 2016
Simply go with the double curtain idea. Walmart sells shower curtain hooks that have 2 hooks. One for the shower liner ( cheap not even worth cleaning just replace), the other is for the curtain. If you sew try a single flat sheet hemed. If you own a sewing machine that makes button holes you space them to attach to the hooks. You just pick what ever color you want.
  • Michelle Michelle on Sep 13, 2016
Use twin flat sheets for the outside curtain. and plastic in the tub.. get the color you want that way. Also go idea is to take velcro on one side of the tub were the inside curtain to keep it in the tub..

What about using the painters drop cloth idea that is all the rage - def cheap, definitely durable, and it is a natural color that would be washable and go with the wallpaper.
    • Tracy Evans Tracy Evans on Sep 15, 2016
Yah, that's what I was going to suggest too. Sometimes there is a seam in unwanted places though. Also, I use paint chips that I've matched (as best I can) to the wallpaper and carry them with me so I can match colors better when Im out shopping. Bedsheets make a quick and easy curtain too.

plaids and/or dark colors should never be used in small spaces. Makes them appear/feel even smaller
  • Sammik2u Sammik2u on Sep 16, 2016
actually Jess as an Interior Designer for many years I have to somewhat disagree with you. Sometimes bolder color and larger pieces in a small space will make it look larger. From my perspective I would go with a blue/grey. It is masculine works very well with tan and browns, looks more current and is a neutral as well. If the wall paper pattern is enough for you than just go with a solid or a bold, wide vertical stripe, in a cream or a green as in the wallpaper. Bring in some grey.chrome/silver etc accents..to carry it thru ie: towels, foliage, decanters, art work and your all set.
