Should I plant my onion?

I left one of my onions in the fridge too long and now it has a sprout about 2" long. I've thought about planting it (I garden in my kitchen with lots of sun and windows), but I wonder if it will grow, and should I cut it into quarters and plant those or plant it whole intact? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Yes you can plant it no problem. You can also plant your lettuce stems to get a free crop. I usually just put the stem on water for a few days and then plant them. You will have lettuce to cut in about 2 weeks. Be sure and just take the larger leafs and allow the plant to grow more.

Try it! What's the worst that could happen, anyway? Just a hint though - don't store onions (or potatoes) in the fridge.

Thanks so much, I have it planted now. I'm good at growing basil, but now I'll see if I'm any good at onion!

Thanks, and you're right, what's the worst that could happen? I saw recently how to store fruits and vegs, and now I have my kitchen and fridge organized much better. I'm thinking of copying an Ikea idea for a bar on the wall and storage baskets hooked to it for storing vegs etc.

If, instead of cutting just the roots from green onions you cut up about 1/2 inch from the roots then plant the ends. they will grow into onions. Same for celery. Up about an inch.

I had forgotten about celery, but mine did not grow as expected
