SINK SMELL

The Garden Frog with C Renee on Sep 06, 2013There are a couple different things to try. As a rule of thumb if you run ice through the disposal once week or when you remember that helps keep the blades clean and sharp. I would cut up some citrus peels and run them through with ice. You should never run onions or potatoes through the disposal because the peels get caught up in the blades and smell or clog up the disposal. There are things on the market too but I would try ice and it may take a few minutes and run about a handful of ice at a time. with running and without running water. Good luckHelpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Sep 07, 2013Renee Fuller is spot on with this. Ice will aid in removal of grease build up. Often a source for smells. Boiler hot water will also remove the grease build up as well. The old wives tail that the ice will sharpen the blades is simply not true. It just helps remove the build up in the unit so it will grind better giving the illusion that the blades are sharper. Any citrus will help make things a bit nicer as well. We used to when we had one, throw any older citrus that was just to ripe to eat anymore. Lastly some odors are caused by the trap being filled with sewage that has not completely flushed down the drain. It is very important that you not only run the unit when grinding stuff, but a few long seconds after to assure that the pulp grindings are flushed away well.Helpful Reply

Lin R on Sep 07, 2013Wal-mart sells Disposer Care. You put the little pouch in your disposal, paper and contents and it cleans with foam. We have had good luck with it. I am going to try the ice also.Helpful Reply

Core Plumbing San Diego on Sep 08, 2013The smell from the disposer is, more often than not, from the 7/8" hose running from the air-gap to the disposer...if you have an air-gap. The hose gets coated with gunk and when gunk biodegrades, it produces methane gas and that is the bad smell. Time to replace the 7/8" hoseHelpful Reply

Therese C on Sep 08, 2013Pour 1/4 cup of salt, ice cubes and 4 halves of lemons down the disposal. The salt and ice helps sharpen the blades, and the lemon will cut the odor and make the room smell great.Helpful Reply
