the best bet is to use a pumice stone and simply scrape it off. Its likely a calcium deposit from hard water

take water out of bowl, don't flush. Take an old towel and get it soaking wet, plug up the hole tightly with the towel. Use a big enough towel so that it does not go down the plumbing. Pour in a gallon of vinegar and let it soak over night. The stain will be gone, your toilet bowl will be shiny. It works on badly stained toilets. Soaking the towel keeps the vinegar from soaking into the towel. Make sure the towel is in there as tight as you can get it. Some toilets you can take the water out and slowly you the vinegar in and it won't drain. Good luck.

I was told by a Plummer to use muric acid from the hardware store. Put in toilet bowl and wait 15 min and then flush. Clean with toilet cleaner. This removed black from toilet in the house we bought.

Product called CLR (calcium, lime, rust) used without dilution should work without scratching. Rub on directly & generously. Leave sit for 15 minutes then flush!

"The Works" is absolutely the BEST toilet bowl cleaner out there. I just discovered by accident about 2 years ago and now can't live without it.

There is a non-abrasive 'stone' that looks like a block of pumice. This has worked well for me and it does not damage the porcelain. You might have to ask for it. There are about the size of one of those shortening blocks used for cooking. The benefit is no scratching and no chemicals. If your house has the issue, then rest assured everyone on that water system does too. Ask your neighbors and the local hardware store.

I use baking soda and vinegar. Pour in the baking soda, pour in the vinegar. Let it foam up. Leave for about an hour. Swish around with a toilet brush and flush. If the stain is really bad, remove as much water as possible. Soak paper towels with vinegar and lay them over the stain. Let that sit for a while. Remove the towels and scrub with a toilet brush and flush.

Agree with JoAnn. Pumice stone works great. You may have to us a little elbow grease as you us the stone to scrub ring. It will eventually remove the ring.

It will not take the porcelain off if you do it correctly....I have used it for years and never had a problem...the trick is to use a light hand....

I also use a pumice stone...we have a well with lots of calcium. I have seen Plumbers use a chisle edge tool & a rubber mallet...I tried it with a large, long screw driver & it chipped off the worst down in...

Go to Walmart and buy a bottle of THE WORKS in the home cleaning chemical aisle. It works. We have hard water that leaves our sinks and toilets with a brown residue and it makes it all white and bright again. Use it in the sinks, the toilet and tub/shower. I put it in a spray bottle that way it dispenses over the whole area to clean, Old Clorox squirt bottles work best.

You have to find the thick version of The Works. The watery kind isn't as good.

I work in the local hospital, the house keepers told me they use a sanding screen (you can get at your local hardware store). I tried it and it works like nothing I have ever tried before! I buy a 5x7 screen and cut it into 4 pieces.

Have you tried Tang (the astronaut's favorite drink)? Works great in the toilet; also works in the dishwasher. Pour the powder into the bowl, or the tank, let it sit hours to overnight, and then clean as usual
