The rest of the table is wooden. This was my mom's table. It has two leaves to make it seat 8 people. The chairs are all wooden.

Yes you can refinish the table with proper preparation. Lightly sand ,clean, use a good primer (if you are going to paint),allow to dry and proceed to paint again allow to dry and seal with a non yellowing polyacrylic.

I did a desk with a laminated top once. It as oak underneath the formica, so I just scraped the formica off. It mostly came off okay; a few spots were difficult. The wood underneath was beauItiful and was so worth the work!! It is now my computer desk.

Most of the time a secondary (cheap looking) wood is used under laminate. Painting is the best option not knowing what is underneath. Laminate can be removed using a heat gun carefully to soften the glue and some scraping. Laminate will scorch and the fumes are not the best. Work outside to remove the laminate.

I'd use an oil based primer then rough sand it to give it some teeth for the paint to stick to. Paint as usual.
