Rub with Aluminum foil and water. Rinse, dry, seal with mineral oil or a wax, buff out. It works great, but will not remove deep corrosion into the chrome,
It looks like the chrome has been eaten away, probably from acids like vinegar, drain de-cloggers or lime removers...speaking from experience. Unless it is vintage or an antique try any of the above solutions, if it doesn't work replace it. It will cost you more to get it re-chromed.
I'm afraid the surface has been worn away with too harsh a cleaning. You could continue with the harsh cleaning to reveal the Brass underneath or Replace it with new fitting.
