Painted Chair Looks And Feels Like Leather

The upholstery on this chair is PAINTED. It is one of the best projects I've tackled in a long time and is cheap and relatively easy.
The sanded fabric feels just like super soft suede and the color is perfect for my red, brown and turquoise living room.
Heckuva deal on this very sturdy chair with excellent clean fabric, nice wood frame and very comfortable. There were two of them. I should have bought them both!
Use spray bottle to dampen fabric. Mix acrylic craft paint 2 parts and 1 part textile medium. I used cheap chip brushes. One narrower to get into details and a wider one for slapping that paint on. This project took at least 3 coats.
The difference between the second and third coat. At this point I could really visualize the finished project!
Just a few finishing steps to this final result. I've posted a longer narrative on my blog. I am very well pleased with how cheap, easy and wonderful this project turned out to be. Would I paint another chair? YES!
Suggested materials:
  • Acrylic latex craft paint   (my stash)
  • Liquid textile medium   (my stash)
  • Cheap brushes, spray bottle, sandpaper   (my stash)

Hi! I have 3 questions: 1. What was/is the chair material? 2. Does it leave any kind of stain or residue on your clothing? I.e.: Would I be safe to wear white pants and sit down? And, 3. Do you need to put a sealer of any kind? Thanks!

If the chair has a stain on it will this cover it up? I love this idea, thank you for sharing! God bless you!

You know, I've never tried this. I think you'd have to lay them flat to paint them and get them a uniform color. Maybe some other home talkers would know the answer?
