Refinishing painted cabinet - lead paint?
-
William on Sep 27, 2016There are lead test kits available at Ace Hardware, Home Depot, Lowes, Menards. You can check for lead in the paint. Once you know whether or not it has lead, you can take it from there.Helpful Reply

Cindy Hagemann on Sep 27, 2016Wear a mask, use gloves and sand it off with an electric sander. Then use Kilz primer, then paint.Helpful Reply

Sherry Tomsett on Sep 28, 2016They have various paint removers at Lowes or Home Depot. I would use a paste or gel type. Once applied you can use a scraper to remove the paint. Then you can prep for the finish you want. This way you do not have airborne particles that could be hazardous.Helpful Reply

William on Sep 28, 2016Agree with Sherry! DO NOT SAND! Use Citristrip stripper to remove the paint.Helpful Reply

Gail Salminen on Oct 24, 2016Theresia, if you are sanding definitely wear a mask. But if you use chemical removers there will be no air borne particles and you should ok but if you are concerned still use a mask. You can also follow the instructions at this site to see if you have lead based paint - there are many other sites as well. Hope this helps.Helpful Reply
