How Can I Fix This Hutch Door? Help!!!

It appears that this hutch door had a fall prior to my purchase. Is there any way to fix? I was considering drilling a hole and screwing and gluing it together from the side if that makes sense. Or will that split the wood?

thought I could drill a hole below the place where the 2 pieces meet and screw it together to give it reinforcement.

I was going to suggest same thing as Bonnie. Just one of those straight mending brackets would work-it's on the inside so no one sees it.. Then fill with wood filler, sand and paint.
